Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP)
Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) is an exciting diagnostic technology that is useful for treating a variety of important diseases such as heart attack, stroke and respiratory failure. Ampio’s ORP diagnostic device measures total oxidative stress which can be considered much like the vital signs routinely measured in medical practice – temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure and pulse-oximetry (“pulse-ox”). Abnormal ORP results are closely associated with poor outcomes in critically ill patients.
Ampio’s ORP device is a hand-held, point-of-care unit that uses a drop of blood and single-use disposable electrode strips for repeated rapid measurements of total oxidative stress. This ORP device is similar to the finger stick glucose meter (“glucometer”) which uses single-use disposable strips to provide repeated blood glucose measurements for diabetic patients.
Numerous scientific studies have established the clinical value of measuring oxidative stress for a wide range of medical uses, including diagnostic, monitoring and screening. Currently however, no practical method exists for measuring total oxidative stress in clinical settings where rapid results are essential, particularly in critical care areas such as emergency or intensive care units. Total oxidative stress can now only be fully evaluated with a combination of complex, time-consuming laboratory tests that measure individual non-standard biomarkers, such as lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation and total antioxidants. Ampio’s ORP technology will provide the first integrated measure of total oxidative stress in real time with rapid results for optimal patient treatment.
Ampio is conducting clinical trials of ORP technology for acute heart attack (“ORP Cardiac”), stroke (“ORP CNS”) and patients treated in critical care areas (“ORP Critical Care”). Abnormal ORP results will also help identify hospital patients who are at high risk for unplanned early readmission to the hospital, a critical unmet medical need. Early hospital readmissions dramatically increase health care costs in the U.S. Using ORP to help identify patients at high risk for early readmission combined with active intervention before discharge could significantly reduce hospital costs associated with unplanned early readmissions.
ORP results may also be useful for home monitoring in the way patient-controlled glucose meters are used for diabetes. Ampio believes the ORP technology addresses a variety of significant market opportunities and plans to commercialize ORP technology with industry partners.
